Obsolescence Management
Application
Underwater vessel needing replacement CRT screens for potential tough environmental requirements.
Key Features
CRT with special mounting ears was required to replace a ‘special’. The original was designed to be used in an environment where the display could be severely tilted and subjected to shock. Vibration mountings were all in situ and the CRT was sourced without the ‘ears’.
Timescales
First working prototype was required within 8 weeks.
Scenario
The original CRT included a set of 4 mounting ears on the 4 corners of the CRT. The replacement, although similar, was not identical, so a complex jig was completed to maximise the best ‘fit’ position for the ears which had fixing holes in same relationship to the original.

Actuality The tooling was produced to timeline required and a prototype produced and tested. A simple test jig was produced to ensure that all units produced would fit all vessels. Summary The relatively low volumes anticipated made this potentially simple operation more complex when coupled with the variance between the original CRT and its replacement. Good tooling provided the solution. |
