Adapter to Convert Mil Style Connector
Application
Adapter to convert mil style connector into local USB style outputs.
Key Features
Space was at a premium due to other features on the front panel, neatness and cable positioning being the main requirements.
Timescales
One working prototype was required within two weeks.
Scenario
The original panel output connector was a mil style circular. The interconnection to a high specification active component could have involved cutting off its standard mating connectorand reterminating to an alternative thereby invalidating important warranties, etc. The adapter overcame these concerns but needed to be small and connector outlet rotated by 90°, to avoid obstructions, gave additional benefits.
In addition the watertight specification of the panel was to be maintained. This was achieved by moulding a thread into the adapter moulded casing. The wires were terminated and encapsulated before fitting the COTS connector, and securing the lid.
Two variations were required so common features were utilised within the moulding design to reduce tooling costs.
Actual
The prototype was turned and milled from aluminium, sprayed to look the part, wired and shipped within the timescales. This was trialled by the customer more for the mechanical properties than the electrical requirements.
Summary
A simple task by all appearances, a neat solution provided by an unobtrusive yet neat moulding, now covered by NATO registration.
